Overview

Our carbon footprint calculator uses a comprehensive methodology based on established scientific principles and verified emission factors from leading environmental agencies. We calculate your annual CO₂ emissions by analyzing multiple aspects of your lifestyle.

Our Approach: We use conservative estimates and industry-standard emission factors to ensure accuracy. All calculations are based on peer-reviewed scientific data and government statistics.

Calculation Components

Your carbon footprint is calculated by combining emissions from five main categories:

1. 🚗 Transportation (Driving)

Calculation: Weekly miles driven × 52 weeks × 0.411 kg CO₂ per mile

Data Source: EPA 2024 - Average passenger vehicle emissions

  • Based on average fuel efficiency of US passenger vehicles
  • Accounts for gasoline combustion and upstream emissions
  • Includes both direct tailpipe and fuel production emissions

2. ✈️ Air Travel

Calculation: Number of flights × emission factor per flight

Data Source: ICAO Carbon Calculator

  • Short flights (< 500 miles): 0.6 tons CO₂ per round trip
  • Long flights (> 500 miles): 2.5 tons CO₂ per round trip
  • Includes takeoff, landing, and cruise emissions
  • Accounts for radiative forcing (high-altitude effects)

3. 🍖 Food Consumption

Calculation: Meat consumption frequency × emission factor

Data Source: FAO 2023 - Food production emissions

  • Daily meat consumption: Higher emission factor
  • Weekly meat consumption: Moderate emission factor
  • Rare/vegetarian: Lower emission factor
  • Includes production, processing, and transportation

4. ⚡ Electricity Usage

Calculation: Monthly kWh × 12 months × 0.4 kg CO₂ per kWh

Data Source: EIA 2024 - US average electricity emissions

  • Based on US average grid mix (coal, natural gas, renewables)
  • Accounts for generation, transmission, and distribution losses
  • Uses regional averages where available

5. 👥 Household Size Adjustment

Calculation: Total household emissions ÷ number of people

Purpose: Per-person calculation for shared resources

  • Divides shared emissions (electricity, heating) by household size
  • Provides individual carbon footprint estimate
  • More accurate for multi-person households

Complete Formula

The complete calculation formula used in our calculator:

Annual CO₂ (kg) = [(Car Miles × 52 × 0.411) + (Short Flights × 0.6 × 1000) + (Long Flights × 2.5 × 1000) + Meat Factor + (Electricity × 12 × 0.4)] ÷ Household Size

Step-by-Step Breakdown:

  1. Calculate driving emissions: Multiply weekly miles by 52 weeks, then by 0.411 kg CO₂ per mile
  2. Add flight emissions: Multiply short flights by 0.6 tons (600 kg), long flights by 2.5 tons (2500 kg)
  3. Add food emissions: Apply emission factor based on meat consumption frequency
  4. Add electricity emissions: Multiply monthly kWh by 12, then by 0.4 kg CO₂ per kWh
  5. Calculate per-person: Divide total by household size to get individual footprint
